This game was played using many of the ACW collection in the Gallery section.
For this game I went for a Union attack on Confederate supply lines during the advance through Virginia...the scene is a Reb supply depot preparing for an attack from a Union Division. The Rebs have dug in gun batteries ready for the enemy.
Most of the troops are from 1st Corps and must be the 5th collection of their figures for this period I have painted. There are also troops from Renegade and a few from Old Glory. Below you see the positions of the Confederate forces with four full regiments and a unit of dismounted cavalry protecting the right flank plus a large battery of artillery.
Here we see the Union forces in Two Brigades ready to advance with three Iron Brigade regiments to the right of the line and three regiments from a Pennsylvanian Brigade to the left. They are all supported by a two gun battery in the centre and Berdans skirmishing to the front.
As the Union advanced they were immediately met by volleys of shot from the battery inflicting severe casualties on the Iron Brigade. This halted their advance temporarily whilst their support moved up.
On the other flank the Pennsylvanians were faring slightly better but taking casualties.
The Union continues to advance
Volleys from the Unions batteries do little damage as their infantry continue to suffer heavy casualties as they advance
Eventually the Pennsylvanians manage to reach a fence that the Confederates were defending and a vicious hand to hand fight takes place.
On the other flank the Iron Brigade reserves advance towards the guns but take massive casualties in this attack as they are hit with cannister.
The Rebs are to strong for the depleted Union forces and they retreat in disorder
Finally the Union commander decides to abandon the attack and lick his wounds as his frontal attack has failed with heavy losses. The Confederate supply lines are safe for another day.
